Is see Karl crying about being low-holed by "bait thugs" on the River Reports page. Is a bait thug a guy who beats the crap out of his sandshrimp before he fishes them? Or does a bait thug slap his eggs around like a little girl before putting them in the egg loop?

Apparently in "Karl's World", only bait fishers low-hole people and fly tossers are a step above everyone else.

Hey Karl, I hate it when guys out my zipperlips too. Then the next thing you know, fly guys are showing up thinking they should have a mile of river to themselves. rolleyes

I had no idea there was this kind of animosity between gear guys and fly guys...

I guess this is the dark side of the force confused confused confused

Like fishing and hunting news hasn't been telling seattle all about the peninsula for the last half dozen years. It ain't no secret. We bait thugs bought the same fishing license the whiplash crew purchased. Most of these yahoos learned on the cowlitz (combat at its best) and by giving you 30 feet they think their doing you a favor. Better get used to it cause until Mt Rainer blows and evens out the odds thats what is going to take place on our rivers.

I really do not think there is much animoysity between flyguys and gear guys...it is totally blown out of proportion.

Yes, some flyguys are d*cks to gear guys but I have also seen gear guys be total asses to flyguys....and some gear guys deserve the abuse and there are flyguys that deserve the abuse as well.

Sparkey is correct, its not the group fly vs gear but just the individual who act this way

I guess my point was.....it ISN'T the rod/reel/bait/line a guy uses that make him in inconsiderate jerk. They use gear of all types.....it's not like you pick up a flyrod and all of a sudden you become a considerate angler.

The fishing world could use more considerate anglers, regardless of their gear choice.

There is a different set of ethics between hardcore flyguys and gear fishermen. Gear fishermen will stand on the same rock all day if they think that there is fish in front of them. Hardcore flyguys like to keep moving rather than make the same cast all day. Gear guys (most of us) were born and breed in the terminal areas where it is pretty much every-man for himself. I persoanly believe that if I am going to fishing an area that is a little off the beaten path and there is someone already there you should talk with them and find out how they are fishing and go from there. Guys that barge in below someone else (flyguy or gear guy) in a non terminal area need to learn to be a little more considerate!!!

Well put, Vic, I have had fly guys low hole me while pulling plugs through the hole (BK remember that guy in the view hole?) and then come unglued for fishing "their water" when I was their first. I've had bait chuckers do the same thing too many times to list. Gear or fly doesn't matter because it's not the method behind the madness, it's the mad man behind the method.

Guess I'll have to come out of the closet too! Ok... I admit it I'm a Bi-Fisher too. laugh

I hate being low holed by some jerk. I'll usually let him know what I'm thinkin too when I get down in that direction but I try to do it in a way that doesn't come across as a blatant attack.

It's usually an individual thing, being a jerk that is, whether they’re fly or gear oriented. But I'll have to comment on one thing that might not be the most popular opinion. I have been low holed and screwed by more bait guys on the Skagit than by fly guys, whether I'm bait fishing or fly-fishing. I tend to fish guts in the fall/winter months and move to feathers in the spring/summer months. So I have a fair number of hours doing both. Fly guys 90% of the time move through the hole, and tend to be courteous to their fellow fisherman (as long as they're fishing a fly). Bait guys seem to grow roots 70% of the time and seem to have no qualm with low holing a fisherman they don't know. Yes these are generalizations for certain.

Something else to think about too is that 5% or less of the fishermen on the rivers come here to this board, catch 90% of the fish and are in a position to educate the jerks that we all fish with.

laugh So I'm fishing the other day... And this group of guys with leather jackets and chains come walking down the beach...And they start asking me if I have any bait.....Cause they wanted to beat the crap out of it and steal it's lunch money...So I told them, "no I only go fishing with these feathery thingies". "I don't hang with those slimey things". And they left...
So my question is does saving a few sand shrimp an ass kicking make me a "Bait Lover"?

So whats a fellow supposed to do? He's not the first guy on the river today so when he gets to a spot is he supposed to find out if anybody else is gonna fish there first? If I stand up river do I own all below me? When a driftboat shows up should he ignore all the water I can see? I'm half serious here guys, whats your rules?

I'm kind of wondering the same thing as Herm. If I show up to a drift 10 minutes after someone else, and they are standing at the head of the drift, you're crazy if you think I'm going to wait 30-40 minutes for them to finish fishing that portion and move down. If it's just the two of us I'll divide the drift in half and start fishing below them. If there's another hole below there, I'll give them the whole drift and move down. Is that "low holing" or being considerate?

If I'm in my boat working a stretch and some guy shows up on the bank below me and starts fishing, should I be upset that he's "low holing" me? Heck no! I've got the whole river to fish. This guy had to walk in and he's got very limited areas to fish from. I remember what it was like before I had a boat.

However, when a boat sees me coming down then pulls up and races to the next hole before me, that's a different story.

Goharly,
I would consider that low holling.I always talk to the person and find out what his plan is.I figure that person got out of bed earliar than me and deserves the reward the early bird gets. This is a hard one for me as 99% of my fishing is done without even seeing foot prints all season. The only time I have to share is over on the west end{forks}.I simply treat people as I would want to be treated.Would you want somebody to do that to you with out even aknowledging you?I think that having to deal with the crowds around seatle has to suck?

a few months back I hiked from the oxbow down to allen bar.I had just started working at the top of the hole when a drift boat come banging down the river. He set up camp just below me with a bait diver.I just stopped fishing and took a seat watching him.I politely asked him if he launched at the camp ground. He relunctantly answered yes.I politely stated that I had hiked down and got up and left.
